about

James Ivy kicks off a new era with the release of “Last Star” via FADER Label today. Initially previewed during his livestreamed performance from Brooklyn’s Sultan Room for Porter Robinson’s Secret Sky Virtual Festival in April, the set saw the Korean-American producer, singer, and songwriter playing a number of unreleased tracks, ultimately trending on Twitter.

“Last Star” shows James’ production at its most joyful and euphoric yet. Jangly guitars and an upbeat vocal riff referencing the touchstones of ‘00s pop mask an undercurrent of uncertainty and paranoia, as he insists “something doesn’t feel right... it’s getting too comfortable to breathe.”

“Last Star” follows James’ first original track of 2021, “Texas”, and a string of 2020 singles garnering early praise. James comments,

““Last Star” is a song that’s kind of placed in this uncanny valley. The instrumental of the song is sugar-y, bright, and upbeat, while the lyrics completely contrast the mood of the instrumental as they’re paranoid, doubtful, and anxious. I really love listening to music that does this. Songs that feel happy, with subject matter that doesn’t necessarily match, always hit hard for me.”

lyrics

Noddin’ off while driving
90 on i95
I’m on autopilot
Eyelids feel like dumbells
Grab a cig and light it
I see angel numbers
It’s a sign i decided
Think i must be dying-
If I’m really dying
Then this might be the last time
But i'm not really crying
It’s somethin’ in my eye
If i was the last star
Burning in the sky
Blinking through my last breath
Could you crack a smile?
For me, for me, for me, for me

Can you turn it around?
It’s getting too comfortable to breathe
Enough talk, can you walk the walk at all?
Long day, new high heels, take ‘em off
Knocked down, get back up, shake it off
Paranoid, act dumb just to play it off
How high can I get ‘fore you’re comin’ home?

Comin’ home x8

Something doesn’t feel right
I’m still tryna find it
Doc said nothing’s wrong but
I always deny it
Think i need to calm down
Inhale, count to five
I tell you that i'm fine
But if i'm really dying then this might be the last time
And I’m not really crying, it’s something in my eye
If i was the last star
Burning in the sky
Blinking through my last breath
Could you crack a smile?
for me, for me

Can you turn it around?
It’s getting too comfortable to breathe
Enough talk, can you walk the walk at all?
Long day, new high heels, take ‘em off
Knocked down, get back up, shake it off
Paranoid, act dumb just to play it off
How high can I get ‘fore you’re comin’ home?

This thread I’m hanging on
Is waiting for me to fall, waiting for me to fall
When it’s all been said and done
You’re all that I’m thinking of, all that I’m thinking of

about

James Ivy Brooklyn, New York

At just 15 years old, the singer/songwriter/producer was already performing at iconic Manhattan venue Chinatown Chalet and a part of an innovative online electro-music community which directly led to the rise of PC Music and hyper-pop. For his new music, he’s detached from the computer and has begun writing with the guitar in hand. The result is something that’s simultaneously grungy and dreamy. ... more
